Understanding risks related to intangibles and knowledge for sustainable business development

Susanne Durst

Chapter 23 in Handbook on Intangibles, 2026, pp 442-454 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Organizations have recently had to learn that they are not only exposed to a multitude of challenges, but that these also take place simultaneously. Many of these challenges are related to knowledge. Given the relevance of knowledge to sustainable business development, it is crucial to understand knowledge risks and their potential positive and negative impacts. This chapter aims to show how knowledge risks, which can be triggered by internal and external challenges, can affect organizations and their sustainable development. In this chapter, knowledge risk is considered as something that can have both positive and negative consequences. In addition, the focus is placed on small and medium-sized companies as they are more vulnerable in terms of risk. The insights conveyed in this chapter should be valuable for different target groups. The proposed approach can add new food for thought to academics while practitioners may learn about a different way of thinking regarding intangibles/knowledge and its relevance.
