A broad perspective on innovation management
Tero Montonen
Chapter 1 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management, 2025, pp 2-6 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Innovation management (IM) research traditionally focuses on guiding new products and technologies from conception to launch. This entry proposes a broader scope for IM, suggesting it encompasses not just managing but also organising and leading various forms of innovation. Highlighting three archetypes – incremental, radical and revolutionary – the entry discusses their management, organisation and leadership. It also explores the potential risks and negative consequences associated with each type. Drawing from scholarly literature, the entry examines how to navigate these complexities to balance innovation's benefits against its broader impacts.
