Chapter 30 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management, 2025, pp 113-116 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Open social innovation (OSI) involves collaboration among diverse stakeholders from different sectors —public, private, and civil society—to address major societal challenges such as health crises, climate change, poverty, and social inequalities. Combining principles from open innovation, user innovation, and social innovation, OSI has been framed as a promising mechanism to harness the ideas, skills, and resources of multiple actors, as well as empower citizens and civil society by providing them with opportunities to help innovate for the public good. This entry discusses the development of the OSI concept and outlines its main features. Additionally, it presents patient partnership as an example of an OSI initiative aimed at tackling major issues in the health sector. Finally, it considers some of the key challenges facing OSI.
