Chapter 43 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management, 2025, pp 166-170 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This entry discusses the diversity and dynamics of emotions at individual and group level and their outcomes at the innovation development. We consider the role of diverse positive and negative emotions in innovating and show how dynamic emotions are contagious and evolve constantly along the innovation development. Shared individual emotions can also become collectively experienced emotions. By analyzing a longitudinal single case study of a project aiming to design an intelligent learning environment equipment, we showcase the variety and dynamics of both positive and negative emotions, several triggers for these emotions, and their impact on the innovation development process. In terms of theoretical implications, this entry highlights the interplay between individual-level and group-level emotions and uncovers the outcomes where diverse emotions may lead. As for managerial implications, this entry suggests that managers should invest in continuous monitoring of diverse emotions and in developing procedures to provoke positive emotions.
