Reflective design

Chapter 50 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management, 2025, pp 191-195 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The entry focuses on the reflective model of the design process in innovation activities, contrasting that with the rational model of design. Based on Donald Schön's ideas, the reflective model approaches design as an intuitive, dynamic, and iterative process, emphasizing ‘reflection-in-action’. The reflective model supports innovation by providing value especially when information and objectives are unclear or conflicting. The model involves conscious reflection on actions, termed pre-reflective design. While the rational model views design as a linear, structured phase within product development, the reflective model portrays design as an active process encompassing the entire innovation path, enhancing creativity and adaptability in uncertain conditions.
