Human rights responsibility

Samentha Goethals

Chapter 58 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management, 2025, pp 222-226 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The concept of business and human rights responsibility (BHRR) has gained traction, requiring companies to respect human rights throughout their operations and value chains. This entry explores BHRR and its operational mechanism, human rights due diligence (HRDD). HRDD, a risk-based process, helps firms identify and mitigate potential human rights harms caused by their activities or relationships. While HRDD offers opportunities for incremental innovation in data collection and reporting through technologies like AI and blockchain, deeper innovation lies in embedding BHRR across company functions. This includes fostering meaningful stakeholder engagement, providing grievance mechanisms for affected communities, and collaborating with suppliers to address structural injustices in global value chains. Ultimately, BHRR holds the potential to drive transformative change in business models and cultures, fostering a more sustainable and responsible business landscape.
