Capability approach

Tiina Rättilä

Chapter 6 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management, 2025, pp 21-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Considered a crucial issue for the successful performance of firms and the entire economy, the concept of innovation capability has received increasing attention in research about innovation and innovation management. Literature has identified several dimensions of innovation capability, but the focus of research has mostly remained at the level of individual companies. This entry introduces the Capability Approach (CA), developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, as a way to bridge the gap between micro and macro levels of analysis. CA is a general framework focusing on identifying and evaluating factors that impact people's well-being and their ability to function in society. CA has opened up interesting perspectives for research, which partly challenge and partly complement previous economic- and technology-focused viewpoints on innovation. The entry argues for a need for innovation management literature to engage in deeper critical analysis and exploration of the interrelationships between innovation, well-being, and development.
