Chapter 78 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management, 2025, pp 295-297 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Non-corporeal actant theory (NCAT) explores choice: choice made by individuals influenced by actor networks, relations, and prospective sensemaking. Values and beliefs constrain decision-makers, as does their impression of the reaction to their action from the social. NCAT enables flattening of the macro, meso and micro levels of organization by providing a means to follow rhizomes embedded in the network. The ongoing nature of organizations and individuals is change, oscillating with persistence. The non-corporeal actant is necessary to visualize how the social has agency in the decision-making of the one or few who act. Narratives are important data for NCAT; they can be found in all forms. Early work was embedded in historical analysis of the archive, later work with social media, and ongoing debates demonstrate the efficacy of the approach to virtually and decision environment.
