Muslim philanthropy in France: a terra incognita to be explored

Charles Sellen

Chapter 11 in Philanthropy in the Muslim World, 2023, pp 172-196 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: France and Islam share 13 centuries of history, with brilliant and dark episodes, confrontations and alliances, misunderstandings, and cross-fertilizing exchanges. Today, France has the largest Muslim population in Europe, and Islam is the country’s second-largest religion. Private philanthropy is currently being revived after being discouraged for several centuries by the State. At the intersection of these two unusual contexts, this contribution seeks to identify the existence and explore the emergence of philanthropic practices by French Muslims. It suggests ideas and avenues for the further understanding and development of these nascent dynamics.
