Abstract: The Caribbean is a meaningful site to investigate broad and diverse conceptions of philanthropic action and civil society. Highlighting the experiences of Muslims in the Caribbean, this chapter first analyzes trends of the regional Muslim experience and philanthropic activities and then utilizes a country case of The Bahamas to explore local activities of Muslim philanthropic action. The analysis allows for a more inclusive analysis of philanthropy and civil society, highlighting Islamic religious experiences and informal and formal practices of philanthropy in the Caribbean. This broadened assessment of philanthropy centers on the experiences of communities with a historical and ongoing experience with oppression and exclusion. Through various practices, Caribbean Muslims fully engage in national and regional civil society through educating society at large and through various programs and activities focused on civic engagement, youth development, and social welfare provision.
