Abstract: Faith-based philanthropy has been embedded in Egyptian culture since ancient times. As the official state religion and the predominant faith in contemporary Egypt, Islam and its beliefs influence most aspects of Egyptians’ lives, including their giving practices. Thus, an understanding of Egyptian religious institutions is necessary to appreciate the dynamics of the charitable sector in Egypt. After providing a historical overview of religion and civil society in Egypt, this chapter describes the major institutions that govern philanthropic giving in the country, such as Al-Azhar Al Sharif, Dar El-Iftaa Al-Masrya, and the Ministry of Religious Endowment. Thereafter, it discusses the various mechanisms and vehicles used by individuals, families, and corporations that enable charitable giving. The chapter then concludes with a discussion of Islamic practices of giving, focusing on as Zakat, Sadaqah, and Waqf in the Egyptian context.
