Can education foster entrepreneurship? The case of a Portuguese entrepreneurial university
José Paulo Esperança
Chapter 13 in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education, 2025, pp 302-311 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Despite increased investment in science and technology in Portugal, resulting in a significant rise in research outputs, including scientific publications and patent registrations, the growth of entrepreneurship has lagged. Nonetheless, recent initiatives to develop a more robust entrepreneurial ecosystem and integrate entrepreneurship education are beginning to yield results. Innovative educational models simulating real-world challenges and integrating interdisciplinary skills have proven effective in enhancing students’ entrepreneurial aspirations. This chapter addresses the experience of a Portuguese university that was an early advocate of entrepreneurship education, highlighting the methodologies that have supported new venture creation by multidisciplinary teams.
