Abstract:
Recent papers on lying propose that social norms are a key driver of honesty. We discuss possible empirical tests of this proposition and review the experimental literature that has undertaken such tests in the context of lying games based on the seminal die-roll paradigm (Fischbacher and Föllmi-Heusi, 2013). Our analysis suggests that normative considerations lie at the heart of the aversion to lying documented in the literature.
