Abstract:
Royal Jumbo Food Group is the Netherlands’ second largest Dutch supermarket chain and fourth largest family firm, fully owned and managed by the Van Eerd family. Jumbo operates 700 stores in the Netherlands and Belgium with annual sales of around €10 billion. In September 2022, Frits van Eerd, third-generation CEO, is taken into custody as a suspect in a police investigation involving some of the firm’s sports sponsors. Besides being CEO, Frits closed all kinds of sponsor deals and established Jumbo’s own racing team. The investigation focuses on money laundering through real estate transactions, car dealing, unexplained cash deposits, and sponsorship contracts in motor cross sports. Frits steps down as CEO, but the case could continue for years. How to govern this large family firm - honored by Dutch royalty for longevity, influence, and integrity - becomes a big question mark. What should Jumbo do to move on?
