Jacobson Hardware Store: overcoming conflict, dysfunction, and death in a family business

John James Cater

Chapter 16 in Case Studies in Family Business, 2024, pp 183-193 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Martha Jacobson took over leadership of a Louisiana USA hardware store when her husband died. She was joined in the family business by her two sons, T.J. and Richard. The two sons did not get along, and their conflicts and the dysfunctional behavior of younger brother Richard led to a split in the family. T.J. opened a family hardware store in another city, but his family withdrew support at the last minute. Despite this, T.J. opened the store and operated it for ten years before closing due to financial problems. T.J. then began a successful career as a life insurance agent. A few years later, Richard Jacobson was shot and killed at the front door of his home by an unknown assailant. Dealing with the tragedy, Martha Jacobson must decide if she should close the family legacy, invite an outsider to help run the business, or persuade T.J. to return.
