Feuding siblings: sowing the seeds of conflict in the family business

Abstract: Luis and Carmen worked hard starting several businesses in Spain, saved money to escape poverty, and offered their children (Felipe, María, and Julio) opportunities they did not have in life. They were devoted to helping their children make their own living, providing jobs in the family business for Felipe and María and for each child an apartment, a car, and business premises and/or tourist apartments for them to rent. But Felipe’s and María’s management of their respective family business units has not been prosperous. They ask Julio to join them to request that Luis donate part of his estate to them during his lifetime. Julio believes the right thing to do is to be grateful for all their parents have done for them. Felipe and María see Julio’s rejection as betrayal, and communication becomes aggressive among the siblings and conflict between the two sides ensues.
