Chapter 7 in Case Studies in Family Business, 2024, pp 87-95 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This case focuses on the print and media company Schmidt and its CEO Joachim Schmidt’s succession dilemma. The family business is in its fifth generation and Mr Schmidt realizes the prospect that his daughter does not want to take over the firm when retires. He wants to avoid conflict with his wife by asking his daughter to take over the reins. None of the longtime employees is eligible to lead the company, so Mr Schmidt and his advisor seek potential buyers for the family business. Now, they must evaluate the three interested buyers who differ in number of holdings, focus of their investments, their future strategies for Schmidt Print and Media, and their purchase price expectations. This case examines the tension between family-internal succession and sale of the business. Readers can put themselves in the position of the M&A advisor and assist Mr Schmidt in finding the best solution.
