Chapter 14 in The Elgar Companion to Energy and Sustainability, 2024, pp 227-238 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
A key dimension of sustainable development is ensuring access to clean, safe and reliable energy sources. There is still a large contingent of people who do not have enough energy to meet their basic daily needs, which highlights the condition of energy poverty present in many places. The concept of energy poverty is not uniform globally, varying according to the context of each country or region. It is considered that energy planning is often unable to contemplate the social dimension in its policies, which creates frameworks of injustice. This chapter proposes to discuss energy justice as a guideline to combat energy poverty, to the extent that its principles can be incorporated into the planning and implementation stages of energy policies, as a cross-cutting measure. The current energy transition framework is an opportunity to promote energy justice by expanding access to clean, secure and affordable sources, and leaving no one behind.
