Chapter 18 in The Elgar Companion to Energy and Sustainability, 2024, pp 283-294 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The impacts of disasters associated with climate change go beyond socio-economic losses. Impacts of climate change affect the lives of people in more subtle but significant ways, and these often go unnoticed. While some people are affected directly, other can be affected indirectly. Impacts on people can occur before, during and after disaster events. These impacts affect not only the physical health but also the mental health of people. Recent research has witnessed a major surge in the number of studies being undertaken on the impacts of climate change on the psychological well being of people. In the 21st century, the research community has been trying to bring to light the various ways climate change impacts are affecting the mental health of people. The recent policy brief of the WHO links mental health to climate change and climate anxiety and post disaster trauma are new terms in the health sector.
