Sustainability business practices and reporting in Africa

Galila Khougali and Catalina Spataru

Chapter 3 in The Elgar Companion to Energy and Sustainability, 2024, pp 57-72 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the dynamics of sustainability reporting in Africa, with a specific focus on businesses certified by B Lab, amid the rising interest in sustainability certification across the continent. Utilizing the B-Corp Impact Score tool as a metric, companies aspiring for certification undergo evaluation against an 80-point qualification threshold. As of July 2023, approximately 60 companies operating in Africa have achieved B-Corp certification. The chapter examines case studies that illustrate the diverse approaches within this certified cohort. Noteworthy challenges, including data availability, reporting disparities, and limited awareness, are illuminated. Addressing these hurdles is crucial, especially considering the influence of regulatory frameworks and the geographical distribution of certified companies. In conclusion, the study highlights the need for substantial potential of sustainability reporting in Africa but emphasizes the necessity of concerted efforts in education, regulation, and regional inclusivity to fully realize its transformative impact on the African business landscape.
