Chapter 4 in The Elgar Companion to Energy and Sustainability, 2024, pp 73-89 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter navigates the evolution of venture capital, illustrating its evolution from a narrow focus on financial gains to an approach that deeply values societal and environmental impacts. As we trace the history of venture capital, we spotlight its transformative role in societal advancements. Emerging from this context is the significant rise of impact investing, deeply rooted in technology and the pursuit of social good, but also seen as a vital tool to address pressing challenges humanity currently faces. Our discussion underscores teamwork, open dialogue, and evidence-base decisions in this dynamic domain. Moreover, we explore the nuances of ethical entrepreneurship. Through illustrative case studies like Pachama, Eureciclo and Letrus the chapter showcases the potential of tech-driven impact investing. We conclude by championing how one can reimagine venture capital’s foundational principles, intertwining profit and purpose, positioning it as a central force for innovation, responsible leadership, and the betterment of humanity.
