Negative externalities of collaborative consumption: the cost of exploitation

Abstract: Collaborative consumption (CC) holds at its core sharing and prosocial behaviors that imbue trust and community among the participants. As this economy has grown, however, byproducts have also increased, imposing human and financial costs. Some of these outcomes include assault and suspicious data capture, advanced at a global level. We examine the impact of these spillover effects as negative externalities of CC. We focus specifically on digital surveillance and human trafficking activities exacerbated by contactless technologies and unchecked policies within accommodation and transportation sharing. As these externalities threaten the intent of CC, we call for critical change to ensure sustainability.
