Chapter 15 in Understanding Collaborative Consumption, 2024, pp 202-213 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of recent developments in collaborative consumption (CC), such as decentralized financial networks, including peer-to-peer lending and cryptocurrency communities (internal and external). First, we offer a brief review of how recent technologies such as blockchain have led to new innovative peer-to-peer networks such as cryptocurrencies. Next, we discuss the various roles that consumers assume in the cryptocurrency realm (e.g., users, novice investors). Additionally, we provide an overview of more established peer-to-peer lending and peer-to-peer financial networks, cryptocurrency communities, and how they evolved into decentralized financial (DeFi) systems. To conclude, we present a research agenda to inspire future work on this important and rapidly developing area.
