What is an I-O journal and an overview of the editorial process

Wiston A. Rodriguez and Zhiqing E. Zhou

Chapter 1 in How to Conduct and Publish High-Quality Research in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, 2025, pp 2-19 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of commonly referenced journals in the field of industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology by describing their characteristics, publishing trends, and the editorial review process. We begin by defining what academic peer-reviewed journals are, along with the major publishers associated with I-O journals. In addition, this chapter explains the different types of articles published (e.g., empirical articles vs. theoretical papers) and other unique formats (e.g., special issues) that are commonly published in I-O journals. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the editorial process by detailing the unique roles of the editorial team, the review process, and how a manuscript evolves from a submission to a publication. Through this comprehensive review, we hope that readers gain valuable insights regarding peer-reviewed journals and the editorial process within the field of I-O psychology.
