Mixing methods is like mixing motor oil: the benefits and challenges of internal replications with multiple and mixed methods

Chapter 12 in How to Conduct and Publish High-Quality Research in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, 2025, pp 146-170 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, I address three key questions regarding internal (within-article) replication studies with multiple and mixed methods included within an article that can contribute to research credibility and validity. First, I address the question of why we should conduct internal replications by elaborating on how internal replications using different methods in complementary manners can help improve a study's overall validity, including statistical conclusion, internal, external, and construct validity. Second, I address the question of how we should conduct internal replications by discussing several different forms of internal replications, such as those with multiple (experimental and field survey) methods, those with mixed (quantitative and qualitative) methods, and two nascent forms (i.e., scale development with mixed methods and meta-analysis followed by an individual study), along with actual example studies and actionable recommendations. Third, I discuss multiple challenges facing the use of internal replications and subsequent internal (vs. traditional/external) meta-analysis.
