Abstract: Abstract: The history of publishing in the field of industrial-organizational psychology is reviewed, starting with the publication of Journal of Applied Psychology in 1917. I review the development of APA publishing standards and how they have changed over time. Then I present an analysis of articles from 1922 compared to articles from 2022 and demonstrate that earlier articles were much shorter, had fewer authors, relied on fewer citations, and were much less likely to rely on theory. Finally, I provide suggestions based on this historical review to help beginning writers. These suggestions include considering general versus niche outlets, reading articles in the outlets for which you are submitting, keeping on top of methodological advances, and paying attention to impact factors, though not being overly swayed by them.
