The art of being rejected

Abstract: Rejections are an inevitable part of the publishing process. This chapter draws from the advice of leading scholars to share different strategies for coping with rejections and moving forward with a piece of research after it has been rejected. We address both the emotional side of dealing with rejection and the practical side, specifically in terms of what edits to make, what journal to submit to next, and when to (or whether to) move on from a paper and put your energy elsewhere. We hope that by sharing the collective experiences of more senior researchers, junior scholars will feel both comforted and better equipped when rejection comes their way.
