Building research networks: a guide for graduate students and junior faculty members

Abstract: In this chapter, we discuss potential strategies for graduate students and junior faculty members to build an effective research network. We utilize the open, diverse, and deep framework to ground our recommendations. Open networks exist when the focal individual is connected to groups or clusters of people who are not connected to one another. Diverse networks include collaborators with a variety of strengths and KSAOs, which ideally complement that of the target individual. Finally, deep networks involve strong relationships via trust, reciprocity, and frequent interactions. Additionally, we conclude the chapter by providing a brief overview of potential action steps for graduate students and junior faculty members to build a more effective research network.
