Abstract:
Abstract: Compared to other fields, researchers in I-O Psychology and Organizational Behavior are fortunate in that they have several useful work motivation theories to guide their pursuit of research success. In this chapter we review a number of these motivation theories and tie them to behaviors that we believe ultimately lead to a successful research career. We begin the chapter by discussing some of our own views regarding research success. We then describe three general principles—a motivating work environment, developing effective work habits, and developing collaborative relationships—that are all related to research success and can be tied to work motivation theories. We conclude with a set of specific recommendations, organized by stages of the research process, for increasing research success.
