Chapter 4 in How to Conduct and Publish High-Quality Research in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, 2025, pp 42-51 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Every author must decide to which journal to submit their work. In this chapter we offer suggestions and factors to consider when making such a decision using two broad umbrellas: journal-centric factors and person-centric factors. Related to journal factors, researchers are encouraged to consider journal-paper fit, journal reputation and impact factor, journal policies, and the intent of the paper. Related to personal factors, researchers are encouraged to consider institutional factors such as which journal publications are valued within your academic discipline or institution, one's career priorities (e.g., tenure “clock” considerations), and the needs of one's research team. In making decisions, we encourage researchers to consider multiple factors in order to maximize their likelihood of papers being accepted into journals that align with one's career plan.
