Chapter 8 in How to Conduct and Publish High-Quality Research in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, 2025, pp 88-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Abstract: Surveys reflect a powerful tool for addressing research questions. Researchers must consider issues related to measurement, participant recruitment, survey design and timing in order to best utilize this technique. This chapter reviews key issues related to the development of high-quality survey research, providing recommendations on best practices. We review recent survey-based research in top I-O psychology journals to provide insights into what research designs are most acceptable to journals with high impact factors, as well as how surveys are used in studies published in these journals. Based on this review, we highlight considerations related to the pairing of surveys with other data collection techniques, as well as when it might be most important to include time separation, multiple rating sources, or other design decisions. We close with additional recommendations related to effective study design and emerging issues related to survey-based research.
