Business power in Latin America
Jonas Wolff
Chapter 10 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Business and Government, 2026, pp 55-60 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Recent years have seen an increasing academic interest in Latin America's economic elites, their composition and internal organization as well as their relations with and influence upon the political system. One important debate in this context concerns business power; that is the power and influence that economic elites wield over political regimes and the policy-making process. This question is of utmost relevance for Latin America's highly unequal democracies, in which small sets of individuals, families, corporations and economic groups control large parts of the economy. This entry reviews the emerging scholarship on business power in Latin America, situates it in the broader literature on economic elites and business politics in the region, identifies key arguments and findings and discusses open questions for future research.
