Chapter 14 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Business and Government, 2026, pp 79-83 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Cooperatives have long been an integral part of many countries’ economies. Interest in cooperatives has surged in recent years amidst growing concerns about the negative social and environmental externalities of contemporary capitalism. This entry begins by providing an overview of cooperatives with a focus on their definition, their seven principles, and different ways of categorizing them based on the composition of their membership and the economic sector in which they are active. It then introduces three notable scholarly conversations about cooperatives—the creation and scaling of cooperatives, the democratic governance of cooperatives, and cooperatives’ relationship with other entities—and highlights promising avenues for future research.
