Corporate political activity in Africa

Chapter 17 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Business and Government, 2026, pp 94-99 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The importance of managing political environments to gain or sustain competitive advantage has spurred the orchestration of corporate political activity (CPA) – i.e., firms’ efforts to favourably influence government policy. CPA research started several decades ago, but it is only in the past decade that CPA in Africa has received some scholarly attention. This entry discusses the reasons for the limited research on Africa-focused CPA, synthesizes existing CPA studies along the perspectives used and the lenses adopted, and outlines future research directions that can leverage Africa's unique context to provide critical insights for advancing CPA theory and generate valuable lessons for the socio-economic development of the region.
