Chapter 35 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Business and Government, 2026, pp 197-204 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In the efforts to establish a system of global governance at an international level, Multistakeholder Initiatives (MSIs) play a crucial role. MSIs are voluntary, self-regulating, and often cross-sector collaborations involving various public, civil society, and private actors (such as companies, unions, governments, or NGOs) to cooperatively achieve specific human rights, social, and/or environmental goals. This entry focuses particularly on MSIs where multinational companies engage to attain their human rights, social, and environmental objectives, contributing to sustainable development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Along with a definition and a typology of MSIs, various examples are presented. The conclusion includes a critical analysis of the contributions of MSIs as well as their limitations in achieving sustainability goals.
