Abstract: Vocational education and training (VET) is crucial for both continuous and inclusive economic growth. It helps develop necessary skills for complex industries, boosting competitive advantage and growth. Additionally, VET offers opportunities for disadvantaged groups, improving their job security and career progression. Despite its importance for an inclusive and continuous growth, not all countries have effective VET systems. This entry discusses the reasons for the variations between VET systems across the world. It suggests three multi-level dynamics shaping national VET systems: (i) the complementarities and type of coordination between national institutions including VET systems, business associations, labour unions, welfare system, financial system, corporate governance, and the state; (ii) the political struggles between the stakeholders of VET, namely workers, employers, and the state; (iii) the global political and economic dynamics affecting countries’ and their firms’ position in the global economy as well as causing the spread of work structures across the world.
