Consequences of POP: research quality and dissemination of knowledge

.

Chapter 3 in Publish or Perish, 2024, pp 37-54 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: POP has adverse consequences in terms of research quality and dissemination of knowledge. These include the inflation of scholarly publications, deteriorating quality of published research, impeding innovative research and the discovery process, slowing down the dissemination of knowledge, the practical irrelevance of published research, and interdisciplinary arbitrage. Researchers have long faced a natural tension and trade-off when deciding whether to build on accumulated knowledge in a field or pursue a bold new idea that challenges established thinking. This situation is portrayed to be a conflict between “productive tradition” and “risky innovation”.
