Consequences of POP: research misconduct (part 2)
.
Chapter 7 in Publish or Perish, 2024, pp 115-140 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Authorship misconduct may involve gift authorship, guest authorship and ghost authorship. An indicator of research misconduct, taking the form of reporting fake results, is the inability of researchers to reproduce or replicate the results of other researchers. ChatGPT can be thought of as a ghost author: just like no one would declare paying a ghost author to write a paper for them, no one would say that the text (at least) was generated by ChatGPT. While some observers believe that the case for a causal link between POP and research misconduct is rather weak, it is human nature that when people are put under pressure to do something, they use “all necessary means” to respond to pressure. It is true that research misconduct will not disappear by abandoning POP, but POP has intensified misconduct.
