Cities and their neighborhoods - images and interpretations
.
Chapter 1 in Rethinking Neighborhoods, 2024, pp 2-20 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In the first chapter, I review some of the important and relevant roles that neighborhoods play in our lives and in the city, offering some observations on definitions, naming, and importantly the way in which neighborhoods have been used in the media to provide interpretations of how we live. I discuss why neighborhoods are important and why they matter. The chapter provides an introduction to what is the central theme of rethinking neighborhoods, that they are core elements of how we live our lives. In this chapter I lay out the basis of our continuing interest in neighborhoods, thoughts about what makes a good neighborhood, and why they matter in understanding cities.
