Social cohesion and neighborhood connections

.

Chapter 7 in Rethinking Neighborhoods, 2024, pp 133-148 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the counter narrative to the commonly expressed view that neighborhoods don’t matter so much anymore, the view that we are living in neighborhoods without connection to our neighbors. Rethinking neighborhoods is about taking a close look at the role of connection and cohesion as components of the neighborhood and our lives. I show that social cohesion and social capital are extremely useful ways of thinking about neighborhoods and what they offer. Where respondents feel they are part of the community, where they participate in the neighborhood, they report greater feelings of life satisfaction, wellbeing, and place satisfaction.
