Chapter 4 in Global Leadership Practices, 2024, pp 69-88 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
We start by giving an overview of the relevance of diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) practices. First, the construct of diversity management is critically reviewed. The dimensions of diversity are illustrated and a glossary is provided. We then discuss the challenges of leading DEI and essential causes of the difficulty in implementing DEI practices, namely, systemic barriers based on biases, stereotypes and discrimination. This chapter focuses on refugees, who deserve special attention because they face numerous formal and informal barriers before being able to fully enter local labour markets. The construct of the “canvas ceiling” explains this phenomenon. We show how IKEA Australia supports refugees’ workforce inclusion through their DEI practices.
