India: the many faces of IT India
Jasmin Mahadevan
Chapter 9 in Global Leadership Practices, 2024, pp 175-192 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
India is a complex phenomenon which is not easy to grasp. Or in the words of Indian author Shashi Tharoor: ‘Any truism about India can be immediately contradicted by another truism about India.’ This chapter aims to develop awareness of what all these diverse Indias have in common and also how they differ, which is central to successful global leadership involving India. The case of the multinational computer company ‘Engineering AG’ gives an insight into their R&D activities in Bangalore. The IT team’s dynamics are analysed to illustrate the complex culture of India. This chapter integrates positivist, interpretive and critical perspectives to help to develop cross-cultural leadership competencies by reflecting upon culture’s impact on an outsider in relation to Indian culture.
