Teaching and learning
Malcolm Tight
Chapter 4 in Rethinking the Academic Experience, 2025, pp 37-60 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Teaching and learning is one of the core areas or aspects of the academic experience – students participate in higher education to learn from the academics who teach them. Yet, teaching and learning is about far more than this straightforward interpretation might suggest. In this chapter we will focus on three related aspects that are strongly emphasised in contemporary debates and policies regarding the teaching and learning function: employability, the belief that a, or the, major purpose of higher education is to prepare students for the world of work; learning gain, the focus on what students actually learn from their participation in higher education; and retention and engagement, the concern of institutions and academics with keeping their students participating and involved throughout their higher education experience.
