Administration, management and leadership
Malcolm Tight
Chapter 7 in Rethinking the Academic Experience, 2025, pp 97-112 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on three related issues concerning the administration or management of higher education institutions: managerialism, leadership and bullying. Managerialism signifies the increasing role given to management as higher education provision has massified and is often presented in contrast to older, ‘traditional’ academic values such as collegiality. Leadership concerns how those in more senior roles, at department, faculty or school, and at institutional levels, undertake their duties. Bullying impacts research, teaching and learning and all aspects of the academic experience. It is considered here because managers and leaders have a particular responsibility to ensure that bullying is dealt with effectively.
