Return migration and diffusion: case studies and micro-econometric evidence
Patrick Gaulé
Chapter 3 in A Research Agenda for Migration and Innovation, 2025, pp 33-44 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the existing evidence on return migration and the diffusion of knowledge to migrants’ home countries. Improving total factor productivity is key to economic development, and return migration may potentially help developing countries catch up with advanced economies. Relatedly, knowledge diffusion migration could be an important channel through which developing countries may benefit from the emigration of skilled and talented nationals, despite traditional “brain drain” concerns. I start by reviewing case studies, particularly Saxenian's “New Argonauts”. I then discuss challenges in studying return migration and knowledge diffusion. Finally, I cover a number of recent empirical studies across a wide range of empirical contexts.
