Migration and the STEM labor market

Kirk Doran

Chapter 6 in A Research Agenda for Migration and Innovation, 2025, pp 87-100 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the intertwined dynamics of knowledge diffusion and displacement effects in the context of migration and innovation. Drawing on recent advances in empirical economics, it highlights how these phenomena represent two sides of the same coin: while migration can foster knowledge sharing and innovation, displacement effects arise when collaboration and knowledge exchange between migrants and natives are limited. The chapter integrates insights from contemporary growth theory to frame these relationships conceptually and reviews the empirical literature addressing both knowledge diffusion and displacement in STEM labor markets. It also connects these findings to broader studies of peer effects in science and innovation. By examining existing evidence and methodologies, the chapter outlines a research agenda to advance the theoretical and empirical understanding of how migration simultaneously reshapes labor markets and fosters innovation.
