Patent management in a digital and AI world

Beat Weibel

Chapter 2 in A Modern Guide to Patents, 2025, pp 49-64 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In a highly interconnected world characterized by digitalization, artificial intelligence, digital ecosystems, etc., patent management has become more important than ever. Although patent systems go back centuries, patents are still a valid and effective legal means to foster innovation and create value for a company today. The prerequisite for this is that patents are managed strategically. Furthermore, the patent system should be modernized by providing more flexible approaches and solutions to AI-created inventions and other intellectual achievements.
