Chapter 22 in Elgar Companion to Female Chief Justices in Comparative Perspective, 2026, pp 473-489 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores how the first female President of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, Dineke de Groot, conceives of her position and the extent to which it is possible to identify feminist traits in her approach to leadership of that Court. Justice De Groot is not a quintessential feminist leader, and does not conceive of herself in those terms. At the same time, her approach to leadership has features that are more associated with female rather than male characteristics and she can be described as a socially engaged leader. She attributes value to collaborative problem-solving and cares about how others are affected by (legal) decisions. This is what initially drew her to a judicial career, and it continues to be the central sentiment that guides her conceptualization of the role of President, both internally in her own decision-making as well as externally, notably vis-à-vis the general public.
