The reshaping of work and (post-COVID) urban competitiveness in mid-sized metropolises: the case of Porto

Abstract: This chapter discusses the geographies of knowledge-based work in the city of Porto in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic. It suggests that while the attractiveness of central locations persist for office space, a spatial re-composition of knowledge-based work toward other attractive living and leisure districts is likely taking place as hybrid working modes proliferate. Also, the increasingly accepted possibility to work from everywhere raises challenges to the ability of indigenous firms in the digital economy to attract and retain talent, facing heightened competition from transnational firms both in Porto and around the globe. Over time, these changes bring opportunities and risks to the competitiveness of Porto’s knowledge-based activity and entrepreneurial ecosystems.
