Chapter 6 in The Impact of COVID on Cities and Regions, 2023, pp 74-91 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the socio-economic challenges of inclusiveness in the context of the competitiveness of cities in India in a post-pandemic era. The significance of addressing historical challenges of inclusion and institutionalising long-term reforms for strengthening cities is reiterated. The chapter presents a modified explanation of the competitiveness of the metropolitan and larger cities through an emphasis on the needs of and potential contribution by the low-income migrants and informal sector. Based on the analysis across identified smart cities and select case examples from India, the chapter advocates for inclusive strategies in the post-pandemic era to strengthen the competitive profile of metropolitan cities in emerging economies.
